Students Receive Foundation Honor Awards at Barton
County Community College
Barton County Community College has announced the
recipients of its $800 Honor Awards
for the 2005-06 academic year. These scholarships are awarded by
the BCCC Foundation from endowed scholarship funds. To qualify for
an Honor Award, a student must have a grade point average of 3.0
to 3.49 and be enrolled full time at Barton. The following students
are recipients of Honor Awards:
Benton
Brianne Carlson, a 2005 graduate of Circle High School, is
a recipient of the Employees’ Development Fund Scholarship.
In high school, she was active in Danz Team and Students Against
Driving Drunk. She also was named to the honor roll and lettered
in Danz Team. She is the daughter of Robin Couey, Benton, and plans
to major in dance.
Claflin
David Krier,
a 2005 graduate of Claflin High School, is a recipient of
the Golda Underhill Bailey Memorial Scholarship. In high school,
he was active in C-Club, cross country, basketball, track, FFA,
and all-school play. He also was named to the honor roll and received
letters in cross country, basketball and track. He is the son of
Debbie Krier, Claflin, and Darryl Krier, Ellinwood, and plans to
major in electronical and mechanical specialties.
Claflin
Amanda Ney, a 2005 graduate of Claflin High School, is a
recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies. In high
school, she was active in volleyball, C-Club, danceline and Student
Council. She also was named to the honor roll and was chosen as
a homecoming candidate. She is the daughter of Diane Ney, Claflin,
and Jerry Ney, Great Bend.
Cimarron
Kayla Nichols, a 2005 graduate
of Cimarron High School, is a recipient of the Western Kansas Manufacturers
Association Scholarship. In high school, she was active in cheerleading,
track, A-team, C-Club and Students Against Driving Drunk. She also
earned membership in the National Honor Society serving as secretary.
She was named to the honor roll and served as senior class secretary.
She is the daughter of Kelly and Amy Nichols, Dodge City, and plans
to major in business.
Ellinwood
Charlene Degenhardt,
a 2004 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the
J.A. Mermis Jr. Memorial Scholarship. She is a sophomore at Barton
majoring in technical accounting. In high school, she was active
in Kansas Association for Youth, track and band. She also was named
to the honor roll. At Barton, she has been active in pep band, choir
and concert band. She is the daughter of Mary and Dan Degenhardt,
Great Bend.
Jessica Greer, a 2005 graduate
of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the Chrissie Roe Evans
and Dick B. Evans Memorial Scholarship. In high school, she was
active in International Club, debate, tennis, basketball, band,
choir and Scholars Bowl. She also earned membership in National
Honor Society. She received state band honors and was named to the
honor roll and “Who’s Who Among American High School
Students.” She is the daughter of Steve and Terri Greer, Ellinwood,
and is a business/accounting major.
Phyllecia Julian, a 2005 graduate
of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment
for Academic Studies. In high school, she was active in Kansas Association
for Youth, Art Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, debate, forensics,
basketball, track and volleyball. She also lettered in basketball,
volleyball, debate, forensics and band. She is the daughter of Tim
and Donna Julian, Great Bend, and plans to major in athletic training.
Danielle Kasselman, a 2004 graduate of Ellinwood High School,
is a recipient of the Employees’ Development Fund Scholarship.
She is a sophomore at Barton majoring in human resources management.
In high school, she was active in choir, Family Career and Community
Leaders of America, Kansas Association for Youth and Fellowship
of Christian Athletes. She was also named to the honor roll. At
Barton, she was named to the Dean’s List and Phi Theta Kappa.
She is the daughter of Patrick and Renee Kasselman, Ellinwood.
Felicia Pruett, a 2005 graduate
of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the Marlene Morrison
Endowment Scholarship. In high school, she was active in band, choir
and pep band. She also served as football manager and boys and girls
basketball manager. She is the daughter of Dan and Penny Pruett,
Ellinwood.
Kyle Sieker,
a 2004 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the
Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies. He is a sophomore at Barton,
majoring in sports management. In high school, he was active in
basketball, tennis and FFA, and was a teacher’s aid. He also
was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Jerry and Marcy Sieker,
Ellinwood.
Craig Soeken, a 2004 graduate
of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the Great Bend Farm
Equipment/Hopkins Scholarship. He is a sophomore at Barton majoring
in general studies. In high school, he was active in FFA, Fellowship
of Christian Athletes and golf. He was also named to the Honor Roll.
He is the son of Steven and Janene Soeken, Ellinwood.
Alexandria Ukens, a 2004 graduate
of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment
for Academic Studies. In high school, she was active in volleyball,
track, pep band, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Kansas Association
for Youth. She was also named to the honor roll. She is the daughter
of Daniel and Colette Ukens, Ellinwood.
Haley Ward, a 2005 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient
of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies. In high school, she
was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Fellowship of Christian
Athletes and choir. She is the daughter of Kim Ward, Ellinwood,
and Jake
Ward, Ellsworth.
Danielle Zink, a 2003 graduate
of Ellinwood High School, is a recipient of the W.R. Robbins Scholarship
in Financial Management. She is a sophomore accounting major at
Barton. In high school, she was named to the honor roll for three
years. At Barton, she was named to the Dean’s List in 2004.
She is the daughter of Sherry Fullbright and Bill Zink, both of
Ellinwood.
Ellsworth
Tamara Emmons, a 2004 graduate
of Ellsworth High School, is a recipient of the Clara Barton Nursing
Scholarship. A sophomore at Barton, she is majoring in nursing.
She is the daughter of LeeAnn and Brian Emmons, Ellsworth.
Trisha Emmons, a 2004 graduate of Ellsworth High School, is a recipient
of the Employees’ Development Fund Scholarship. A sophomore
at Barton, she is pursuing an Associate of Science degree. She is
the daughter of Brian Emmons and LeeAnn Emmons, Ellsworth.
Fort Scott
Amber Mason, a 2005
graduate of Fort Scott High School, is a recipient of the George
Tregellas Chairman’s Scholarship. In high school, she was
active in FFA. She is the daughter of Jerry Mason, Fort Scott, and
is a nursing major.
Great Bend
Jeunnesse Amendola, a 2005
graduate of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the Barton
County Medical Society Scholarship. In high school, she was active
in Future Educators of America and A Cappella Choir. She is the
daughter of Maria Elena Vazquez, Great Bend, and plans to become
a licensed practical nurse or medical assistant.
Tanner Burton, a 2005 graduate
of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the W.G. and Beatrice
Nicholson Memorial Scholarship. In high school, he was active in
soccer. He is the son of Kelly and Colleen Burton, Great Bend, and
is majoring in general studies.
Barbie Deschner, a 2005 graduate of Great Bend High School,
is a recipient of the Quentin Dressler Memorial Scholarship. In
high school, she was active in Pep Club, Kayettes, Panther Danceline,
cheerleading and Student Council. She also served as captain of
the danceline and was named an NDA All-American for two years. She
is the daughter of Karry and Brad Deschner, Great Bend, and plans
to major in X-Ray Technology.
Candis Ehrlich, a 2000 graduate
of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the Donna Schmidt Memorial
Scholarship. She is the daughter of Glen and Leona Ehrlich, Great
Bend, and is majoring in criminal justice.
Brandon Enabnit, a
2004 home school graduate, is a recipient of the Donna Schmidt Memorial
Scholarship. A sophomore at Barton, he is majoring in criminal justice.
He participated in the Sheriff’s Explorers and now works on
the security team at Barton basketball games. He is the son of Mel
and Diana Enabnit, Great Bend.
Benjamin Grover, a 2005 graduate
of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment
for Academic Studies. In high school, he was active in swim team,
cross country, track and Madrigal Pops Singers. He also was named
to the honor roll and attended Boys’ State. He is the son
of Karl and Cathy Grover, Great Bend, and plans to go into the medical
field.
Kendra Hoskins, a 2004 graduate
of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the J.A. Mermis Jr.
Memorial Scholarship. She is a sophomore at Barton planning to major
in dental hygiene. In high school, she was active in A Cappella
Choir, soccer, volleyball, Kayettes, Prom Committee and Pep Club.
She earned membership in the National Honor Society. In addition,
she was a Kansas Scholar and was named to “Who’s Who
Among American High School Students.” At Barton, she is active
in Cougarettes. She is the daughter of Kendall and Jennifer Hoskins,
Great Bend.
Julietha Jones, a 2005 graduate
of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the Gus and Ethel Gagelman
Memorial Scholarship. In high school, she was active in yearbook
and German Club. She was also named to the honor roll and “Who’s
Who Among American High School Students.” She is the daughter
of Donald and Brenda Jones, Great Bend, and plans to major in business/education.
Holly Post, a 2005 graduate
of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the Don and Phyllis
Whelan Academic Award. In high school, she was active in Drama Club,
Thespian Society, flags and Kayettes. She is the daughter of Ron
and Shelly Post, Great Bend, and plans to major in drama/education.
Torisha Shorté, a 2005
graduate of Great Bend High School, is a recipient of the Marlene
Morrison Endowment Scholarship. In high school, she was active in
Drama Club, Spanish Club, band and Kayettes as a board member. She
served as basketball manager and flute section leader. She is the
daughter of LiAnna Shorté, Great Bend.
Grinnell
Dalen Meier, a 2005 graduate of Grinnell High School, is
a recipient of the Melvin O. Nuss Academic Award. In high school,
he was active in basketball, golf, TSA, Catholic Youth Organization,
vocal music, baseball and the school play. He also was named to
the honor roll and received letters in golf, basketball and academics.
He is the son of Joan Zerr and Vitus Meier, Grainfield, and plans
to major in business.
Hoisington
Nathan Brown, a 2005
graduate of Hoisington High School, is a recipient of the George
and Cleo Tregellas Scholarship in Music. In high school, he was
active in band, tennis and forensics. He also earned membership
in the National Honor Society. He was a four-year member of the
Kansas Music Educators Association District Honor Band and received
I ratings at regional and state music festivals. He is the son of
Luke and KerriLynne Brown, Hoisington.
Christina Defenbaugh, a 2005 graduate of Hoisington High School,
is a recipient of the Emmett and Elizabeth Koelsch Academic Scholarship.
In high school, she was active in track, volleyball, basketball,
and Cardinal Crew. She is the daughter of Robert and Etta Defenbaugh,
Hoisington, and plans to major in nursing.
Hoisington
Janai Lange, a 2004
graduate of Hoisington High School, is a recipient of the Grace
and Clay McConnell Memorial Scholarship. She is a sophomore at Barton
majoring in social work/psychology. In high school, she was active
in Family Career and Community Leaders of America, Cardinal Crew,
cheerleading and Upward Bound. She also received academic honors.
She is the daughter of Kim and Bill Lange, Hoisington.
Caryn Knoblich Mong,
a 2004 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a recipient of the
Gus and Ethel Gagelman Memorial Scholarship. In high school, she
was active in Drug Free Youth In Town. At Barton, she is active
in Hilltop Singers, Student Senate, Cougarettes and Phi Theta Kappa.
She is the daughter of Rod and Julie Knoblich, Hoisington, and is
majoring in children’s education.
Hoisington
Chelsi Morris,
a 2005 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a recipient of the
Jeanette K. Haak Memorial Scholarship. In high school, she was active
in Family Career and Community Leaders of America, Cardinal Crew,
TASK, Drug Free Youth In Town, volleyball and softball. She also
was named to the honor roll and received letters in volleyball and
softball. She is the daughter of Wade and Diane Morris, Ellinwood,
and is a nursing major.
Courtney Whistler, a 2005
graduate of Hoisington High School, is a recipient of the Barton
County Bar Association Scholarship. In high school, she was active
in choir, forensics and Youth for Music. She also was named to the
honor roll. She is the daughter of John and Cyndi Whistler, Hoisington,
and plans to major in criminal justice.
Junction City
Janelle Cumro, a 2005 graduate of Junction City High School,
is a recipient of the Mary C. Krause Memorial Scholarship. In high
school, she was active in dance team, Kansas Association for Youth
and class committees. She also served as the dance team lieutenant
and was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Jeff and
Jan Cumro, Junction City, and plans to major in radiology.
La Crosse
Dana Morse, a 2004 graduate of La Crosse High School, is
a recipient of the Employees’ Development Fund Scholarship.
A sophomore at Barton, she is a member of the pep band and has received
numerous awards for her photography and paintings. She is the daughter
of Tim Morse, Rush Center, and Cecelia Morse, Russell, and is majoring
in graphic design.
Lakin
Robin Dickey, a 2005
graduate of Lakin High School, is a recipient of the Irva E. Fair
Drews Memorial Scholarship. In high school, she was active in cheerleading
and show choir. She also served as dance captain of Showstoppers
and lettered in cheerleading. She is the daughter of Duane and Tammy
Dickey, Ulysses.
Larned
Lorielee Froetschner,
a 2003 graduate of Larned High School, is a recipient of
the Nancy Bartley Scholarship. She is a sophomore at Barton majoring
in photography. In high school, she was active in volleyball, golf,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family Career and Community Leaders
of America, choir and National Art Honor Society. At Barton, she
is active in Cougarettes. She is the daughter of Gary and Brenda
Froetschner, Garfield.
Lewis
Staranne Collins, a
2005 graduate of Lewis High School, is a recipient of the Keith
and Marian Mull Endowment for Academic Studies. In high school,
she was active in Kansas Association for Youth and Future Business
Leaders of America. She also was named to the honor roll. She is
the daughter of Rick and Melodye Ingvalson, Lewis, and plans to
major in nursing.
Carissa Halbleib, a 2005 graduate
of Grinnell High School, is a recipient of the Edith and Harry Darby
Foundation Scholarship. In high school, she was active in chorus,
Pep Club, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, play, band, dinner
theatre and summer volleyball league. She also received letters
in band, chorus and academics, and received I ratings at regional
and state music festivals. She is the daughter of Vicki and Joe
Halbleib, Oakley, and plans to major in business/accounting and
music.
Lyons
Megan Cedeno, a 2005
graduate of Lyons High School, is a recipient of the Clara Barton
Nursing Scholarship. In high school, she was named to the honor
roll. She is the daughter of Jim Cedeno, Lyons, and is a nursing
major.
Candice Kasting, a 2005 graduate of Lyons High School, is a recipient
of the Wilfred B. Marquis Memorial Scholarship. In high school,
she was active in Family Career and Community Leaders of America
and softball. She is the daughter of Virginia and James Kasting,
Lyons, and plans to major in nursing.
Lyons
Jacob Waller,
a 2005 graduate of Lyons High School, is a recipient of the
Carl W. Sebits Scholarship in Business Administration. In high school,
he was active in cross country. He also was named to the honor roll.
He is the son of Ann Thurston, Lyons, and plans to major in business.
Manhattan
Cassondra Ney,
a 2000 graduate of Manhattan High School, is a recipient
of the Lee Wade Memorial Scholarship. In high school, she was active
in volleyball, tennis, swim team, basketball, forensics, debate
and oration. She was also named to the honor roll and was named
the Most Valuable Player in tennis. She is the daughter of Richard
and Marilyn Charles, Great Bend, and is majoring in social work.
Mankato
Tanya Buser, a 2005 graduate
of Mankato High School, is a recipient of the Employee Development
Fund Scholarship. In high school, she was active in basketball,
cheerleading, and flag corps. She is the daughter of Cindy and LeRoy
Buser, Mankato, and plans to major in graphic design.
Newton
Kelly Evancho, a 1995
graduate of Newton High School, is a recipient of the Maloy and
Pauline Breitenbach Allied Health Scholarship. She is a freshman
at Barton majoring in nursing. In high school, she was active in
Business Professionals Association, FFA, and volleyball.
St. John
Ty Cornwell, a 2005 graduate of St. John High School, is
a recipient of the Graydon Johnson Memorial Scholarship. In high
school, he was active in Kansas Association for Youth, football,
cross country, track, basketball and the Academic Olympics. He also
was named to the honor roll and received honors in basketball. He
is the son of Joe and Lisa Cornwell, St. John, and plans to major
in agriculture.
Bradley Fischer, a 2005 graduate
of St. John High School, is a recipient of the Employees’
Development Fund Scholarship. In high school, he was named to the
honor roll. He is the son of Marc and Michelle Fischer, St. John,
and plans to major in auto technology.
Wichita
ChrisDell Harris, a 2005 graduate of Wichita West High School,
is a recipient of the Leila Hamilton Scholarship. In high school,
she was active in track and field, Student Council, and served as
a student mentor. At Barton, she is a member of the track team.
She is the daughter of Sheila Rae Davis, Wichita, and plans to major
in criminal justice.
Wilson
Ashley Frimmel, a 2005 graduate
of Wilson High School, is a recipient of the Employees’ Development
Fund Scholarship. In high school, she was active in drama, art,
choir, cheerleading, yearbook and forensics. She is the daughter
of Troy and Stacey Frimmel, Wilson, and is a general studies major.
Jeremy Hubka, a 2004 graduate
of Wilson High School, is a recipient of the Dale and Donna Oliver
Honorarium Scholarship. He is a sophomore at Barton majoring in
general studies. In high school, he was active in football, basketball,
track, baseball, Student Council and National Honor Society. He
also received All League honors in football and track. He is the
son of Ron and Ginny Hubka, Wilson.
Sarah Olds, a 2005 graduate
of Wilson High School, is a recipient of the Ryan Vondra Scholarship.
In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, Dramatic
Arts Club, play, choir, Student Council, Catholic Youth Organization,
4-H, cheerleading, and as an American Red Cross Bloodmobile area
coordinator. She also served as a class officer. She is the daughter
of Alan and Wilma Olds, Wilson, and plans to major in psychology.
Christopher Vondracek,a
2005 graduate of Wilson High School, is a recipient of the Adams,
Brown, Beran and Ball CPA Scholarship. In high school, he was active
in Student Council, yearbook, football, basketball, baseball, track,
and as a class officer. He also was named to the honor roll and
received honors in football. He is the son of Steve and Susan Vondracek,
Dorrance, and plans to major in business management.
