Barton MLT Instructor Named Distinguished Instructor for 2008
Barton County Community College named Medical Lab Technician instructor Kathy Heidrick as 2008 Distinguished Instructor at Barton’s 38th commencement ceremony May 15.
Heidrick has worked for 25 years as an instructor in Barton’s Medical Lab Technician Program. After working in the MLT Program for 18 years, she worked for three years in the college’s computer center and returned to the MLT Program as an instructor in 2001 to help provide an online option to the program. She has been instrumental in the development of online MLT courses using the e-college platform, as well as the development of virtual lab applications.
She is a recipient of the 2007 NISOD Excellence Award as well as numerous awards for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She now is working toward a master’s degree in instructional design and technology at Emporia State University.
Before coming to Barton, Heidrick worked for Hays Pathology Lab for three years, serving as supervisor of microbiology most of that time.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Kansas State University and completed MT training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1976. She has been a certified Medical Technologist (ASCP) since 1977.
Heidrick also is a community college graduate, having earned an associate of science degree from Dodge City Community College before attending KSU.
She and her husband, Paul, have three children, Alan, Julie and Lori. All three of their children attended Barton.
Faculty members are nominated for the Distinguished Instructor Award by their peers. Heidrick joins past Distinguished Instructor Award recipients John Simmons, Cynthia Artzer, Kathy Boeger, Letitia Snow, Dana Allison, Steve Dudek, Marlene Kabriel, Jeana Brack, Mike Cox, Vern Fryberger, Jane Howard, Bill Robinson, Linda McCaffery (a two-time recipient), Mary Barrows, Stephen Pottorff, Sandra Haas, Stephannie Goerl, Linda Ganstrom, Rick Bealer, Les Schrepel, J.B. Webster, Estella Easterly, Dr. Menter David, Charlie Brown, George Cusick and Sherman Nystrom.
