The Barton County Community College Foundation, office of admissions and financial aid office have formulated a plan to allow any graduating senior from Greensburg High School to attend Barton at no cost. The foundation established the plan this week to provide aid to the Greensburg students, many of whom lost everything they owned when the EF5 tornado destroyed their town on May 4.

Pieces of Kansas history could be lying dormant in the basements and attics of many area homes. People who keep old diaries, newspaper clippings, letters, old maps, books and letters as keepsakes may not realize that these items are slowly deteriorating with time and may not be available for future generations unless something is done to preserve them.

Leawood Couple Donate Extensive History Collection
New Cohen Center for Kansas History Being Added To Barton
Library
Dr. Mary and Barton Cohen enjoy
traveling to all parts of the world, but when they compare
the exotic locations they’ve visited, there is still
no place like home for the Leawood couple. The Cohens have
spent the past 17 years collecting art and books by artists
and authors who hail from the wheat state. They’ve collected
more than 700 books, one dating back to 1849 and more than
40 predating 1900, but now they are planning to donate their
vast collection to Barton County Community College. The collection
will be housed in the college’s library in a newly constructed
Cohen Center for Kansas History that the Cohens funded.

Benefactor’s Donation
Makes New Video System Possible for Barton
Barton County Community College has been able
to replace an antiquated video system in its Fine Arts Auditorium
this year, thanks to the generous giving of a local benefactor
more than two years ago. Before his death June 3, 2003, at
the age of 100, Theodore Frank Deal willed one-third of his
estate to the college and Barton’s Institutional Advancement
Office received the bequest in December of that year.

Kansas Section of NACE International established
a $1,000 scholarship for a Barton County Community College
student during its 21st Annual Corrosion Control Seminar at
the College last week. The annual scholarship will be awarded
in $500 increments next fall and spring, preferably to a traditional-age
student majoring in pre-engineering or science. Kansas Section
of NACE International will also gift conference fees for the

Announces Death of Philanthropist Eva Shafer
Barton
County Community College has been notified that Eva C. Shafer,
96, widow of the late Leonard E. “Gus” Shafer,
died March 23, 2005, in Overland Park, following a short illness.
Eva Shafer was responsible for establishing the L. E. "Gus"
and Eva Shafer Memorial Art Gallery at Barton. She turned
the first shovel of dirt to begin the gallery project on Sept.
22, 1991 and the grand opening was held Nov. 1, 1992. Approximately
7,000 visitors annually come to view the gallery, which has
been called the "Gem of the Campus."

Cougar Tales Bookstore Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Held Thursday
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10
a.m. Thursday for the soon-to-open Cougar Tales Bookstore,
located in the Zarah Mall, 1214 Main Street, Great Bend. The
used bookstore, operated by the BCCC Foundation, officially
opens Feb. 1. The not-for-profit entity entered its for-profit
venture to raise funds for academic scholarships and to fund
various program enhancements for Barton County Community College.
But the used bookstore will also provide a service to a niche
market that hasn’t existed within the community for
several years.

Harms Trust Commits $80,000 to Barton Wellness Center to Fill

Barton Foundation Elects New Members, Names Officers
Four new members were seated on the Barton County
Community College Foundation Board of Directors and the Board
elected new officers for the 2004-05 academic year during
its June 1 meeting. The new members assumed their positions

Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel Dedication Set For Aug. 22
Barton County Community College will host an
open house for the public to view the newly renovated Dorothy
Moses Morrison Chapel on Aug. 22. A half-hour Moses Chapel
dedication ceremony is set for 2 p.m. in the College’s
Fine Arts Auditorium. Following the dedication until 4 p.m.,
the public is invited to tour the Morrison Chapel, also located
in the Fine Arts Building.

Barton's 26th Annual Big Benefit
Auction Set For Oct. 2 to Commemorate 35th Anniversary
Remember the gold ol’ days when Barton
County Community College consisted of a few buildings in the
midst of a massive construction zone, surrounded by mountains
of dirt in what previously served as a 160-acre wheat field?
Longtime Great Bend residents Kevin and Nancy (Lindholm) Sundahl
do. They were among nearly 850 students who trekked across
unpaved walkways, snowdrifts and mud to attend Barton that
first year in 1969-70. They also participated in commencement
activities with the rest of Barton’s first graduating
class in spring 1971.

with Hays Midwest Energy 17 years ago, De Sultzer remembers
how difficult it was to learn his trade. At that time, Midwest
Energy was a small gas system and not the large company it
is today, serving 48,000 customers. With few hands-on training
opportunities, Sultzer struggled in the school of hard knocks
as he learned his new trade.

3i Golf Tournament To Be Held In Memory of Community Leader
Jerie Davis
Former community leader Jerie Davis didn't play
golf, but the inaugural 3i Show Golf Tournament next month
is being held in her memory. Davis, who died last December
at 49 years old, was an active promoter of the 3i Show. She
also enthusiastically championed other causes throughout the
Barton community. Proceeds from the tournament will go toward
at least one academic scholarship at Barton County Community
College where Davis’ two sons, Josh and Jake Wilkens,
began their college educations.

Barton's Academic Enrichment Fund Campaign Runs Through March
Barton County Community College's Foundation
will conduct its annual Academic Enrichment Fund Campaign
next month and it’s counting on the community to open
the door of opportunity for students in need of academic scholarship

– Open the Door in 2004,” with the campaign drive

today (May 15). Accepting the award on Morrison's behalf was
her friend, Great Bend attorney Glenn Opie. The
Distinguished Service Award was created in 1981 to recognize
individuals who have shown genuine regard for, and have performed
outstanding service to the College.
