Eagle Barber Shop Donates To La Oportunidad Fund

Eagle Barber Shop, Great Bend, donated $250 to the La Oportunidad Fund recently for an annually funded scholarship to be awarded to a Hispanic student attending Barton County Community College.

“I think it’s a good cause,” said Eagle Barber Shop owner and operator Jim Anschutz. “We’ve got a lot of young Hispanics in this community and they deserve the opportunity to pursue an education just like everyone else.”

La Oportunidad Fund provides financial-need-based scholarship assistance to Hispanic students in the community. A scholarship endowment portion of the fund was established two years ago, but La Oportunidad also raises funds and accepts donations to support annually funded scholarships. Both the endowment and annually funded award have been developed to help area Hispanic traditional and non-traditional students attend college for completion of degrees or other certificate programs.

Anschutz presented his check to Barton Institutional Advancement Director Darnell Holopirek and to La Oportunidad fund-raising committee member Michael Espinosa. It’s the first barber shop donation for La Oportunidad, which has also received donations from businesses in banking, insurance, news, fitness, restaurant, health care and manufacturing, as well as through group and individual donations.

“Jim’s donation is important because of the outright gift, but it’s also important because we see that it’s not just big business that makes a difference with these contributions,” said Espinosa. “Small businesses are also valuable to La Oportunidad. In this case, it is the owner of a one-man barber shop that stepped up and made the difference.”

The first La Oportunidad annually funded scholarships were given to three students this semester in awards of $500 and $250. Eagle Barber Shop’s donation will be used to fund a scholarship this fall, Holopirek said.
